Bureau of
Labor Statistics - Data Services Group
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the principal fact-finding agency
for the U. S. federal government in the broad field of labor economics
and statistics. It has a dual role as the statistical arm of the
Department of Labor and as an independent national statistical agency
that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates sensitive statistical
and economic data to the American public, U. S. Congress, other
federal agencies, state and local governments, business, and labor
organizations.
BLS data must satisfy a number of criteria, including relevance
to current social and economic issues, timelines in reflecting today's
rapidly changing economic conditions, accuracy and consistently
high statistical quality, and impartiality in both subject matter
and presentation.
The Bureau analyzes and publishes data from the Current Population
Survey (CPS) on the labor force, employment, unemployment, and on
persons not in the labor force. BLS releases labor force data each
month in the news release, The Employment Situation.
The Data Services Group (DSG) uses TPL Tables to support the monthly
publication of household data in The Employment Situation news release.
